Job Overview Skilled Laborer – Street Public Works DepartmentSalary Range: $19.77 - $32.62 Hourly / $41,121.60 - $67,849.60 AnnuallyFLSA Position Class: Full-time, Non-ExemptWork Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6:00a.m. - 2:30p.m. Summary This position is responsible for semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair assignments involving the use of specialized tools and equipment within the Street Division.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesNOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.Performs a variety of heavy manual work in connection with the repair, maintenance, and construction within the street department.Operates front end and deck mowers, turf tractors, backhoe, dump trucks, and jack hammer.Assists in ground and building maintenance.Cuts, trims, and removes limbs and other debris.Maintains city streets by spreading salt and plowing snow, sealing concrete cracks, trimming trees and bushes, and painting lines on roads.Completes work related to pouring, finishing, and working with concrete.Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by checking equipment/tools after each use.Assists with the installation of trench shoring equipment.Follows all safety policies and procedures.Performs other duties as assigned.Minimum Requirements Education and/or Experience High School diploma or GED.Six (6) months of experience in maintenance, repair, and/or construction work. Requirements Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license, or any valid driver's license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.Supplemental Information Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks.Thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work.Thorough knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work.Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the public. Job Related Physical Requirements This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to respond to spoken words, to receive and understand information, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for assembly or fabrication of parts at/or within arm's length, operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Working Conditions The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, vibration, noise, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils, cutting fluids, and hazards including work around operating machinery, uneven surfaces, and narrow or confined spaces.
