Legal Billing Manager

Role: 
A well-established middle market law firm is seeking an experienced Billing Manager to oversee all aspects of the firm's legal billing operations. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely billing, managing complex client billing arrangements, improving billing processes, and leading a high-performing billing team.

The ideal candidate has extensive law firm billing experience, strong knowledge of legal billing guidelines, and a proven ability to partner with attorneys and finance leadership.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the firm's end-to-end legal billing process, including invoice preparation, edits, adjustments, and final billing.
• Manage complex billing arrangements, including hourly, fixed fee, alternative fee, and client-specific billing requirements.
• Ensure compliance with outside counsel guidelines and electronic billing requirements.
• Serve as the firm's billing systems expert and work with internal teams to improve processes and reporting.
• Partner with attorneys and finance leadership to resolve billing issues and optimize billing strategies.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the billing team while establishing quality standards and meeting billing deadlines.
• Monitor billing accuracy, realization, unbilled time, and revenue trends, recommending process improvements where appropriate.
• Support month-end and year-end billing and revenue close activities.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive law firm billing experience, including leadership responsibilities.
• Strong understanding of legal billing practices, billing compliance, and revenue cycle management.
• Experience with legal billing and financial management software - ideally, Coyote, Tabs, Elite, Aderant, etc.
• Advanced Excel and reporting skills.
• Proven ability to manage complex billing arrangements in a fast-paced legal environment.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Prior experience managing a billing team is strongly preferred.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
